Applications

The Shaw handheld diamond core drill and the closely related Shaw soft materials sampler can be used to accomplish a number of field tasks, many of which are not described here for the sake of brevity:

mineral exploration

Originally used almost exclusively by recreational precious metals prospectors when it’s practical boring depth capacity was more limited, the latest model Shaw core drill is now being used primarily by mining company geologists and technicians for systematic field mapping. Achievement of boring depths of 15 meters or more with use of Shaw equipment has become routine.

concrete and rock cold demolition

The pressure exerted by expanding concrete (In this case, Sylentmite brand) in even one-inch diameter borings in rock or concrete is extraordinary. Even tightly buried, large boulders or large masses of steel reinforced concrete can be efficiently rubbleized by filling borings with slurries or pastes of this powerful material.

fence post in rock installation

Under conditions in which soil cover is inadequate, the Shaw handheld core drill coupled with a 1.5 inch (3.81cm) diamond bit can be easily used to advance good, straight borings in exposed rock for the installation of steel (“T”) fence posts.

boring for landscape utilities

The Shaw handheld core drill is ideal for advancing long, straight, accurately aimed borings at any angle in rock or reinforced concrete walls or slabs.

anchor bolt and rebar installation

Because the Shaw handheld core drill is light in weight, self-contained in a backpack and can be comfortably used in any orientation, it is ideally suited for advancing borings in otherwise awkward drilling locations. These borings can be used for the installation of anchor bolts or steel reinforcement rods in roadless area outcrops, cliff faces or through steel reinforced concrete masses (e.g. bridges, concrete structure collapse rescue).

geotechnical sampling

A special cutter head and adaptor for the Shaw bayonet coupled drill string allow it’s use as a soft material boring device and sampler. First designed for collecting deep silage samples in storage silos, it can be conveniently used in peat, soft but cohesive sediments (geotechnical or environmental investigations) and some types of soil (e.g. muck).

blasting

The Shaw portable core drill has been routinely used for placement of dynamite for prospecting and small scale mining of high grade ore. With the use of a high speed electric drill the Shaw drill string and water supply has been successfully used in boring for blasting in mine shafts.

domestic well installation

This application has not yet been proven. Borings of 1.5 inch (3.81 cm) and up to 30 meters depth would appear to be adequate for well installations in which the pump diameter is small.
